Delighted to speak about human factors & patient safety last night to cardiac catheter staff at a regional hospital including nurses, radiographers, med students & cardiologists

Distraction is a major issue - we discussed ways to reduce it & other patient safety-related issues.

When St George slayed the dragon, his limbic system would have also been on fire

We don't fight dragons every day, but when angry, our primitive limbic system can 'hijack' higher brain functions & raise error risk

STOP & think before saying/doing something we may later regret

Checklists often work best when they are short & focused

Some suggest no more than 5 items so here’s mine for now:

On call weekend over ✅

HF talk ready for tomorrow evening ✅

New HF book chapter finished ✅

Suitable beverage poured ✅

Much needed downtime at last ✅

Distractions can have a significant impact on patient safety wherever we work & particularly during intervention procedures

Good team working is vital!

Finally used a Christmas gardening voucher & planted this Amalanchier (Juneberry)

White flowers in spring, leaves turning scarlet & crimson in the autumn & berries for the birds

Can't wait to see how it gets on..!

With 2 great trainees, a well respected human factors expert and a keen medical student as co-authors, its been an absolute pleasure!

Great to see UK medical regulator has published study about power imbalances & negative effects of steep hierarchies

Yes, has to be some hierarchy but team members should feel valued & able to challenge each other about any patient safety concerns

So excited to share my passion for human factors this morning at the Scottish Urology Conference

So many things we can do to improve patient safety, teamwork and morale 😀

Made it to Troon on the south west coast of Scotland

And yes it’s raining and there’s wind blowing off the sea

What an inspirational place to hold a conference. No pressure for tomorrow then…

With the scenery becoming more dramatic, I’ve given up trying to finish our new human factors book chapter for surgical teams

Nearly done but with distraction, multitasking and feeling a little weary, it just wouldn’t be the best it could be..

Human factors apply to us all 😀

Even with the rain, the scenery in the Lake District is stunning

Quite a distraction while I’m trying to finish off our latest book chapter on human factors…

Must write a bit more then about distraction….
