Had a bank holiday weekend of highs & lows

High - was so excited going to Boston for short trip on A380 Airbus to plan some new human factors projects

Low - because outbound flight was cancelled due to technical issues!

Even though it’s raining end on a high in the garden 😀

Great to be on A380 flight deck with Mike, co-author of a recent briefings study

Was going to Boston for 24 hrs but sadly BA213 now cancelled due to technical issues 😔

We always advocate engaging with briefings/checklists as if own life/limb depends on it as with flight today

Sooooo excited.

Heading off soon on a short trip with a human factors theme….

Distractions are a regular occurrence in healthcare - managing them is important

This morning during the team brief prior to our list, we were distracted by a colleague

We re-briefed again to regain focus & highlighted parts of the day where distractions need to be minimised

Delighted our paper is published today about impact of criminal law on patient safety & error reduction

Sadly medical errors & patient harm remains prevalent despite safety being central in healthcare

Will never stop doing what we can to improve safety

Had a tear in my eye reading Professor Sir Roy Calne’s obituary in this weeks BMJ

While I only spent 6 months working for Prof, he has had a huge impact on my career.

He gave me this painting of sweet peas when I left Cambridge - will always cherish it

Rest in peace Prof 😢

Team working, good communication, decision making & others are often called 'soft skills'

In some ways this term damps down their importance

Yes we need expertise & training to do our jobs BUT we also need core & essential skills to make healthcare safer.

Far from being 'soft'

Dodged the rain and rewarded with an absolutely dazzling display of colours at the local gardens

As a medical student, trainee & new consultant, I hadn’t heard of HF!

How things have changed! Just written 3 more HF chapters in new books

Understanding ways to improve safety & performance make such a difference

After a busy week, finally made it to Friday evening after being on call last weekend

Thrilled to get several more human factors teaching invites too- great that colleagues are recognising its importance more & more

Time to switch off now & enjoy a glass of Crémant de Loire 😀
