In the 18th century, there was a real chance of death at any point in life, and there wasn't a big peak in old age. It wasn't just higher infant mortality - the whole distribution was completely different. Great chart by Inquisitive Bird.

On the occasion of starting a new job (and considering my aging wardrobe) I wish derek guy would write a thread on Brooks Brothers non-iron dress shirts and whether there is any substitute for how they were 5-10 years ago. They used to be solid, 100% cotton fabrics you could

I wonder what percentage of people think that JFK was killed by someone on the right. Motivated reasoning is a powerful force.

The sort of fascinating thing in this debate is that Helen (arguing that women are too emotional and mess workplaces up) seemed to keep falling back on feelings while Leah (disagreeing with her) had a more disputatious and facts-and-logic-driven approach.

AI safety advocate: What if we had this super intelligent system, and we said, “We want you to end cancer,” and it killed everyone with cancer? Uh…. Let me tell you about how ordinary human doctors are “curing” Down Syndrome…

As a general matter: while I do not think it’s prudent to carry a weapon when going to protest law enforcement, it is unjust and not in keeping with 2A principles to assert that law enforcement is automatically justified in shooting someone because he is carrying a gun.

I think for those who are at all awake it became clear ten years ago (if it had not been before) that if you are serious about following Christ you cannot not have total loyalty to either major US political party. There are serious problems with both and often the solution is

Religiosity of the place explains much (most?) of this. That's why the middle chapter of my book is about Israel, and why the last two chapters are on anthropology and spiritual sadness.
