Curious how gender critical feminists et al. respond to a transwoman winning in women's chess.

Compared to physical sports, the male advantage is less obvious. Also no physical danger, like in contact sports.

I'm fine with female-only categories, but for other reasons.

People mentioning the solar eclipse reminded me of a funny anecdote of Isaac Newton.

Newton, in correspondence with John Locke, talks about experimenting with looking at the sun through a mirror until he saw bright spots, and his eyes were seriously injured for several days.

Suicide among young people, United States compared with Europe.

Overall, youth suicide rates have fallen in Europe. This is probably the biggest challenge to the hypothesis of social media, smartphones, and so on, being the cause of increased youth suicides. Needs explanation.

Jonathan Haidt (Jonathan Haidt) claims mental health has deteriorated recently, especially affecting young females.

Using CDC data, I looked at how suicide rates in the U.S. for young females have changed between 1999-2020. Both in raw rates, and in relative change since 2000.

The graph which supposedly shows that countries spend far more time on direct childcare, except France, is often shared.

As Philippe explains in this thread, the idea that French people are (contrary to almost everyone else) spending less time on direct child care is ... very
