Fietsplain [feets-spleyn]:

When someone who has never visited the Netherlands condescendingly tells a nation that collectively—and safely—cycles 18 billion kilometers each year they’re somehow doing it wrong.

e.g. “That is irresponsible. Those people should be wearing helmets.”

Fascinatingly, the 16th arrondissement, Paris’ most wealthy - like Kensington & Chelsea - now feels poor and rubbish. They’ve not got on board as want to protect their right to drive everywhere and as a consequence it’s noisy, dirty, and ugly public space. And drivers hooted!

Even the website for it is removed. Labour aren't doing much there. It says 'paused' to reexamine, after 18 months who wants to ask how the reexamining is going?

Whilst we are talking about pavement dining

Soho 2021 vs current Soho

I mean who doesn't prefer cars and vans with their cramped pavement al fresco experience?

Europe could  learn a thing or 2 about how to ruin things from local councils like Westminster City Council

I don’t normally get involved in calling out headlines but it’s just getting bonkers.

If this was directed at a gender, race or religion it would be rightly called out as the hate speech it is. Mums, dads, sons and daughters being labelled as killers. It’s just got to stop.

Can't quite put my finger on why all the right-wingers are now referring to any unfortunate crime in London as 'Sadiq Khan's London' when there was never any mention of 'Boris Johnson's London'

Hoxton Street is a total mess, it’s no wonder it struggles. It often just isn’t nice to visit. This area could easily be a fantastic pedestrian ‘Hoxton Market Square’. Instead it is absolutely ruined by traffic. anyasizer Hoxton Low Traffic Neighbourhood - Needed! Kam Adams

Will Petty 🌳🌳 This is so disappointing Mete Coban MBE Caroline Woodley. We are in a climate emergency. Why are we creating new parking spaces when we know convenient parking just induces demand for driving? Why are the CPZ hours being cut? This is such an own-goal I really don’t understand it.

🙌 City sees sense and that Bank should stay peaceful, safe and free of taxis. The taxi lobby is no doubt seething, but simple reality is pickup/dropoff at Bank is not same as loads of taxis driving through - which would reintroduce road danger for people, incl their passengers.

London Finest will leave no stone unturned to alienate customers.
They are without a doubt the very worst at their own PR.

Since more pedestrians are killed by cows annually in the UK when can we expect a law protecting us from this beefy bovine terror
Iain Duncan Smith MP ?

Things that the Government could do (and have said they would do), but haven’t, instead prioritising the creation of dangerous cycling laws:

- New laws for hit and run offenders, campaigned for by RoadPeace
- Publishing of England road safety strategy
- Undertake full review of

Dangerous cycling laws sound reasonable, but it is an incredibly strange use of Government time and resource given how rare it’ll need to be used.

Every death is tragic but to put it into perspective, on average each year, more pedestrians are killed by cows than by cyclists.

It’s mainly an example of how in political terms, salience trumps normalisation. There have been two nasty incidents in London involving cyclists in the last few weeks. On an *average single day* there are 20+ hit and run incidents in London involving motor vehicles.

Creating a specific law against dangerous cycling won’t make the roads less safe. But if you were to write a list of the best ways to actually improve road safety, it wouldn’t even be on the first A4 page. It’s 95% displacement activity.
