This week, using specialized remote tools, our team and MyFWC safely disentangled a dolphin calf in the Banana River that was first reported by a local eco-tour group. The gear was 7 ft long and consisted of over 20 strands of red braided fishing line, a sinker, and hook.

The entanglement caused significant wounds to the calf’s flukes, illustrating the dangers of fishing line to wildlife. In fact, entanglement in fishing gear is a leading cause of death for dolphins in the Banana River. Calves are especially at risk due to their curious nature.

We will continue to monitor the calf ("Baldwin") to be sure no gear remains.
