Today marks Emancipation Day, and the anniversary of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833. On August 1, 1985, Trinidad and Tobago became the first independent country to declare Emancipation Day as a public holiday to commemorate the abolition of slavery.

London's first ever memorial to victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade has been unveiled. Designed by Khaleb Brooks, it will be located in West India Quay in London Docklands. It is expected to be unveiled in the summer of 2026.
