So pleased by this. This is one of my Devon Whitebeams, one of our endemic tree species. I collected the seed from which this grew from a wild tree in 2016 and now, not only has it burst leaf, but it is about to flower & hopefully produce fruit of its own.

Ground nesting bird season in full swing & National Park are asking people to keep dogs on leads to protect them, whilst permitting thousands of people to trample across the moor as part of the Ten Tors event bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan… this weekend. Timing is everything.

This little wild Geranium grows wild & free in the garden, some would call it a weed, but to me it is beautiful & it comes with an added bonus, Bullfinch love its little seeds, as picked up on my stump box (Great Tit) camera. Think it is Herb or Little Robert? @kate_bradbury

Anyone else see this bbc.co.uk/news/science-e… & think maybe if we encouraged populations of small fly eating to increase rather than causing them to decline we could mitigate against this? Swift bricks? Decent habitat? Ian Carter Hannah Bourne-Taylor Mark Avery Iolo Williams

Enjoyed the bank holiday sunshine writing up some notes for a forthcoming book project whilst enjoying a beer, but not just any beer, a beer that helps save Montagu's Harrier from cereal harvesting nest destruction in Catalonia. Got to be good hasn't it?

2 migratory species that might be coming in numbers. First photo Quail - honest! Calling absolutely everywhere in Extremadura this spring, will good numbers come to UK as a result? Lots of the 2nd photo too, forerunners of a big push north? Another 'Painted Lady' year?

If we all just did this, a little bit of time and respect for nature..
Whether it's not mowing our churchyards to death, installing swift bricks as a norm, or leaving little chambers in a wall like this, would the world be a better place ?! 🥰🌿

Annie is bang on here, I write about this in my book Seasonality. Living in rural mid Devon you'd expect to see foxes regularly, but I don't - they get shot, snared and hunted with hounds. I do see them regularly though in the city of Exeter where none of the above happens.

I rebuilt this part of the wall a few years ago & deliberately built a nest chamber within it. It's taken a few years but...

When I go walking around the village in Extremadura I always take my binoculars, but in Devon I don't. The reason? In Extremadura good habitat is all around, but in Devon it isn't, good habitat here is an exception to be searched for, a specific place to visit. That's wrong.

Take a look on your bookshelf, have a look at any magazines or journals you read, check out the paper & cardboard packaging that wraps the products you buy. If you see this, then you're benefitting from, & providing the market for, Sitka. We use it all the time, everyday.
