You’d think COVID would have taught us not to repeat the streetlamp problem when trying to ascertain cases of a newly spreading virus, but apparently it has not.

One of the most absurd false claims of Peter Daszak was when he claimed the Wuhan Institute of Virology did not keep live bats. As he so often does, Daszak offered an absurd excuse when evidence emerged that proved his previous statement false.

Atomsk's Sanakan Tom Phoeth joseph osmundson (all pronouns) The late double spillover zoonosis position is obviously about faith for you, not evidence. You keep trying to change the subject because Pekar 22 is indefensible. It is flawed in both conception and execution. You can keep spamming but nobody believes you.

Regardless of all else, Morens’ apparent pattern of using Gmail to evade FOIA is a very serious breach of public trust by a top NIH official and should be getting far more coverage by the mainstream press.

Can ASTMH advise whether it raised concerns with the NIH over this proposal by a senior NIH advisor for its members to send 'sensitive matters' to his private Gmail rather than official employer agency email? Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic

Dr David Morens, a senior Fauci advisor at the NIH, asked scientists at the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene to use his Gmail account for 'sensitive issues' concerning the origins of COVID-19 to evade FOIA requirements.

They think this hibecovirus that got an FCS (RTAR; notice the A in the third position, like SARS2!) must have evolved it independently.

Amazingly, not with a 'clean insert' like Bob Garry would say, but with many nearby amino changes, like you'd expect from natural evolution.

New article by Shi Zheng-Li

Coronaviruses probably need similarity to recombine, and larger populations will have more chances to recombine with each other.

Seems strange then that a FCS that occurs in no other SarbeCoV could come from a few animal cages

Anecdotal account below that what would be known as SARS-CoV-2 was known about in November 2019 at least. This is consistent with Markson's account of school classes being postponed, an alert about a severe influenza and Michael Callahan being told of a 'strange new virus'

Tom Wallach, MD Prof Gavin Yamey @gavinyamey.bsky.social Atomsk's Sanakan Libertarian_Virologist Martin W Gigi Gronvall I am confident in saying there is no preponderance of evidence either way.

My stable position is that instead of pretending otherwise, and deliberately misleading the public to boot as we are learning, we should have stuck with “we don’t know but let’s focus on the pandemic”.

Tom Wallach, MD Prof Gavin Yamey @gavinyamey.bsky.social Atomsk's Sanakan Libertarian_Virologist Martin W Gigi Gronvall The reporting was terrible, many highly quoted scientists shown to have misled the public and had different private beliefs, and top officials have illegally avoided FOIA to conspire with them.

And it will to get worse. The anger is now bipartisan. Go speak with Dem Senators. 🤷‍♀️

'If you want to see if a virus is poised for human spillover, an obvious gain of function experiment is to add a furin cleavage site and see if it can now infect human cells. Do that enough times and you may accidentally wind up with a pandemic pathogen. 2/'
