This afternoon's thunderstorms produced 21,675 lightning strikes within 100 km of Sydney between 3pm and 6pm. Not a bad effort for winter.

On the last day of winter in South America, temperatures could peak as high as 45°C (113°F) in Brazil. Brazil could record its highest temperature in history during this winter heatwave. "Heat will be so extreme that it will be dangerous and pose a risk to health and life,"

Work myself and colleagues have done to better understand our key climate drivers in a changing climate. Traditional measures (how much warmer than normal a part of the ocean is) don't really work if everywhere is warmer than normal! Note May 2023 below... bom.gov.au/research/publi…

There is a deep-held belief that El Nino means a dry summer.... data below from The BOM shows that this is very often not the case - over 14 separate El Nino events, rain has been close to average over large parts of the nation. El Nino isn't a 'Magic' that turns the taps off.

This tongue of warm water near the NSW coast just caused Sydney's muggiest morning in 13 years, with dew points hovering around 24 to 26ºC all morning! 🥵 This low-level moisture could produce storms over Sydney or Blue Mountains later today. Details: weatherzone.com.au/news/sydneys-m…

"I've seen various comments that we will have a La Niña this year. The truth is that majority of models indicate neutral conditions in July and only 2/7 suggest La Niña"
