I’m going out on a limb and making a prediction: Trademarks with just 2 letters are the next trademark trend. We’ve had -IFY, -STER, disemvoweling, and now, I think, it’s time for 2 letter marks. Ugh.

EBAY’s name is derived from Echo Bay, shortened because echobay (dot) com was already taken. The company was founded and named on a whim so I can forgive the lack of thought or meaning but still give this trademark 2 Bees. #YourTrademarkSucks

Another #HowOldAmI pop quiz for your Monday: The Government Employee Insurance Company was established in 1936 but its trademark Geico® is more recent than that. The date in the image tells you when it was registered. Can you guess when it was first used in the U.S.? #trademarks

A reader said “This seems borderline.” It hints at STAR WARS and the shape of the letters in the crawl. STAR WARS is a famous mark so the difference in the goods/services doesn’t matter. All in all, though, it’s not quite close enough. Probably OK. #trademarks

Let’s open a coffee kiosk. We’ll call it BLUE DOVE COFFEE & we’ll use the same font as BLUE BOTTLE COFFEE. I know Nestlé owns a controlling interest in Blue Bottle but I bet they won’t care. Oh, & let’s use an emblem that looks just like the Twitter bird! Great idea, huh? Sigh.

Another one in the #HowOldAmI series: One for the Baby Boomers. Remember the Dewey Decimal Classification® system for finding books in a library? The date in the image tells you when it was registered. Can you guess when it was first used in the U.S.? #trademarks

I love how this logo uses the advocacy ribbon shape for the letters CK. We have Simon Tam to thank for this registration’s being allowed. #trademarks

AVOCADORIA will be a great trademark as long as avocados remain trendy. After that, it may be heading the way of RADIO SHACK. For coining a newish word but still being descriptive in a way that won’t age well, I give this mark 2 Bees. #YourTrademarkSucks

Is BZ4X the best Toyota could do for its new car model? Yes, every cool animal, star, planet, & constellation is already taken. And, yes, BMW and Mercedes use nonsense letters/numbers for their models but BZ4X is just awful. 1 Bee and it barely deserves that. #YourTrademarkSucks

Whoa! REALTOR® is a registered trademark owned by National Association of Realtors. This sign is infringing on that trademark.
