We're still looking for UK secondary English teachers to participate in our survey - please do retweet (re-x?) if you're a teacher or have contacts who are. Thank you! Professor Claire Fox

My stepmother just casually mentioned that Alasdair Gray (who was our neighbour for many years) had once done a sketch of my brother. Never thought to mention it before, just the kind of thing one has lying around the house.

Just pushing this one more time - we'd really like another ten or so responses to complete our survey work, so please do circulate to your UK English teacher friends and colleagues. Thank you!

Has anyone written anything good on the idea that if an author doesn't directly condemn something, that should/could be treated as them endorsing it? I've seen a lot of people complaining about this as a modern tendency, but not much in the way of deeper engagement with it.

The cat is very sweet but he will not settle! He wants to sit on my leg. He wants to sit on the bed next to me. He wants to sit on my book. He wants to sit on my chest and stare at me from close range. I am trying to read about early modern torture; he is not making it easy.

I appear to have finally finished writing this journal article, and it's 2.40pm on a Friday - does that mean I can stop work for the week now?

RIP Hector, who died last night after a short period of illness. He was elderly and it was his time, but I shall miss him so much.
