The Conservative government removed the ability of Trading Standards enforcers to do on spec unannounced inspections. My profession warned that industry would simply hide evidence of wrongdoing in the 2 weeks notice they were provided by statute. That warning was ignored

The attitude from government was one of regulators being a burden on business, not a necessary check to ensure necessary standards and a 'level-playing field' economy.

Worth mentioning that during the Brexit debate, it was proposed that leaving the EU would rid the UK of the nasty precautionary principle. Manufacturers need not prove products were safe before placing them on the market. Enforcers would have to prove products were dangerous
