Rescued another 2 oiled swans in Hackney Wick after an oil spillage upstream on the River Lea. Swans generally leave water when contaminated by oil as the cold water can penetrate their bodies. Can be fatal if hyperthermia sets in. Thanks to all those who helped with the rescue

Picked up another oiled swan today from Springfield Marina on the River Lea. Believe it was the mate of the other oiled swan I rescued last week, so will be reunited with its mate at the Swan Sanctuary.

I often get asked "can a swan break your arm with its wings?" Judging from the amounts of whacks I have received from swans, I would have to say yes. Especially if they manage to hit you in the right spot!

Rescued this cygnet at Victoria Park East London after it landed in the lake and got chased out of the water by the resident pair of swans. Was released the next day after some food and a good night's rest.

So while the board of the EA were posing for a photo op yesterday Laurent Howes from the Swan Sanctuary was having to save this swan from the oil slick on the River Lea which a month later Environment Agency has still failed to clean up. Says it all really. x.com/BarkingSwanman…

NOT FOR THE SQEAMISH! Rescued this young swan after it hit a pylon and came down in a stream at the Lea Valley Park, Waltham Abbey. Was rushed to the Swan Sanctuary for emergency surgery and is recovering.
