The Villa of the Birds mosaic is something to behold. There are 33 individual birds represented, each with their own frame. Just stunning!

This little castor ware beaker features two hounds chasing a rabbit. It's made by covering a thin white base of pottery with a black slip.

This example (left) is from St Albans Museums and is similar to one found at Trimontium (right), now in the care of National Museums Scotland

Flemish artists of the 16th and 17th centuries embraced the challenge of drawing animals from life. This is a particularly energetic example by Joannes Fijt, one of Antwerp’s most talented animal painters, currently on display in Bruegel to Rubens: Great Flemish Drawings.

These little cast bronze amulets are over two thousand years old. They come from Lumajang in Indonesia, and date back to around 200 BCE. They were likely used to protect their possessors against danger, evil and disease.

The water buffalo is on display in Gallery 32 on Level 1.
