Not an article I wanted to write.

The deadly H5N1 bird flu is spreading widely, including to mammals.

For the first time, it's now likely spreading mammal-to-mammal, among minks which are exceptionally well-suited conduits to humans.

We must act now.

ICYMI join Andrew Croxford and I as we dismantle the bizarre online myth that Covid is causes immunodeficiency in children

Misinterpretation of basic science, misunderstanding of basic epidemiology, and a healthy dose of conspiracy theory are afoot 💥

So Tim Requarth has a great, nuanced overview, with explanations from multiple top immunologists.

Prof. Shane Crotty : 'I haven’t seen anything in our data or other studies that makes me worried about long-term impacts on immunity to other infections.'

This paper shows that this counts for SC2 as well. A maturation period of at least 400 days. The longer the exposure interval, the better.

Below are estimates of COVID hospitalization absolute risk reduction due to booster shots.
Assumptions: booster lifetime = 90 days, VE = 25% and 59% for the standard and bivalent boosters.
Result: Bivalent boosters reduce hospitalization risk by <0.12% in age groups <65 years.

This explains why hybrid immunity will push protection against infection towards the 8 months time point. This will have, once the population is more synchronized with respect to immune status, impact on the frequency and amplitude of next waves:

Grosse Kohortenstudie aus den USA, die im Studienzeitraum deutlich besseren Schutz vor Hospitalisierung/schwerem Verlauf mit Hospitalisierung oder Tod durch bivalenten Booster im Vgl. zu monovalentem Booster zeigt (Differenz VE 33.5 bzw. 36.9%).

CDC: Omicron booster shots provide some protection against mild illness from Covid XBB subvariants

'the protection varies by age. Adults aged 18 to 49 had a 48% reduced risk of mild illness, while seniors had a 42% reduced risk'

Great compilation of information and threads on the often alleged immune deficiency/exhaustion after COVID. These claims are usually grossly oversimplified and prey on people's legitimate fears and thirst for information.

A new study has found that Germany could save 6.7 million tons of CO2 by introducing a speed limit on the Autobahn. That's the same amount as annually emitted by the D R Congo, a country of 95 million people.

Yes, all of this! 💯⬇️

I'm so tired of these AIDS comparisons and study over/misinterpretations.
Yes, you should avoid infections.
Yes, LongCovid is real.
But there are huge differences to actual immunodeficiencies and AIDS. Don't make it worse than it is.

Many good reflections in thread but this one feels profound:

“existence in online echo chambers, where dissenting views were long since driven out, giving them an impression that their views are now overwhelmingly popular and mainstream, and that they have won the argument.”

In terms of severity of XBB.1.5, we have some early reassuring data from Tom Peacock lab at Imperial College London

XBB (parent lineage) acts like previous Omicron lineages with the altered entry pathway and preference for nasal 👃 cell tissue over lung 🫁

Wie kann es sein, dass Hybrid-Immunität angeblich ½ Jahr gut vor erneuter Ansteckung schützt, obwohl ein Großteil der aktuellen Fälle Re-Infektionen sind?

Siehe Office for National Statistics (ONS) Zweit-Infektionsdaten:
Die größten Kuchenstücke sind durchgängig Fälle, wo gut 6 Monate dazwischen liegen können.
