My fellow infectious disease specialist friends (adult or paeds)

You are marooned on a desert island and can have one antibiotic with you

What do you choose?

Policy responses to the current low take-up of childhood vaccinations are placing far too much emphasis on anti-vaxx and individual parent resistance and giving too little weight to the way access and support have diminished. (1/8)

Measles is, unfortunately, a very interesting (and nasty) disease

It’s also at risk of returning in large outbreaks now vaccination rates have dropped in parts of the country

Everything you wished you never needed to know about Measles

Alasdair Munro So important to ensure all children have had 2 doses MMR to be optimally protected - coverage has dropped in many countries post COVID which substantially increases the risk of outbreaks

Note that from May 2023, hospital beds occupied for covid never even exceeded *the lowest* level of beds occupied during 2022

Needless to say, this is not consistent in any way with progressive immunity damage secondary to covid infection

Whilst this observed reduction in severity is more likely an indicator of population immunity than reduced intrinsic virulence, it doesn’t really matter - outcome is the same

Importantly, immunity will continue to increase over time with further exposure

Good summary of the fact that in current UK conditions JN.1 is resulting in a lower observed 'for COVID beds to ONS prevalence' ratio than we've ever seen previously. Though judging from the QTs and replies, people seem surprisingly cross about what you might think was good news.

Good news = all the 'tripledemic' respiratory viruses appear to be in decline now in the US.

And a reminder that, despite the news stories of historic covid waves, the respiratory virus most likely to bring you to the emergency room in the last few weeks in US was influenza.
