Here is what our neck of the woods looks like from space! Neat view of Apache Point Observatory and SunspotSolarObs and summary of the activities at the two facilities. earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/148884/…
Fun fact! Did you know there is an astroid named after #NMSU? It is called Asteroid NEMSU! Check out this GIF of the asteroid zooming across the sky taken with the 1-meter at Apache Point Observatory!
Congratulations to our own Observing Specialist and NMSU Astronomy grad student David DeColibus on publishing this paper about Uranus' strange moon Miranda, enabled by TripleSpec on the APO 3.5m. NASA should send a flagship mission to go study it! Oh wait... arxiv.org/abs/2204.10832
“I used to lie in bed at night and wonder what we might be able to discover with a new Sloan Digital Sky Surveys instrument. Now, we finally get to find out.” impact.sloan.org/after-21-years…
Aurora spotted at Apache Point Observatory last night! The oxygen red aurora is seen across the north and east and the higher altitude nitrogen blue aurora is seen as pillars in the north. #Auroraborealis #aurorasaurus
We had a great eyepiece viewing session for the ARC Board and SDSS AC meeting attendees! Thanks to Candace Gray and Amanda Townsend for the wonderful sky tour!
Workplace photos of the aurora from APO courtesy of Candace Gray and Amanda Townsend!! Great pics!!! 🤩
We caught the Starliner coming in for a landing at White Sands using our all-sky camera! It's the streak in the southwest corner (lower right) of each frame. Thanks for sharing these Amanda Townsend !
Things were rockin' and rollin' at APO last night! We felt a 5.5 magnitude earthquake centered south of Carlsbad - check the telescope telemetry data that shows the movement! Photo courtesy of Amanda Townsend 🤩 earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev…
