A captivating and thought-provoking talk by Craig Spencer MD MPH about the politicking, unpreparedness, global inequalities, and failures of communication in our response to the Ebola and COVID-19 pandemics. Will we be better prepared for the next one? #2022ASM

And that’s a wrap! What a fantastic conference. Huge appreciation for ASM NSW/ACT Branch, ASM, and all involved with the tireless work behind the scenes. Shoutout to Martina Sanderson for her amazing efforts towards this event and still always finding time to support her PhD students.

Reflections on #2022ASM: one highlight was seeing Dr Kerry Chant speak in-person (still a bit star-struck!). One definite lowlight was beginning my talk by introducing the pathogen I’ve studied for years as Gram-negative when it most definitely is Gram-positive…🤦🏾‍♂️😅

The robust evidence presented here very strongly supports the conclusion that the pandemic originated within the Huanan market, NOT the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Let’s finally put this conspiracy theory to bed.

People can get #COVID multiple times. I keep hearing people say they'll be fine because they've had COVID before. That isn't true. You can get COVID 2, 3, 4+ times. And your reinfections can be significantly worse. We need a public education campaign about reinfection risk.

Glycans are the most diverse and structurally complex of all biopolymers. They are found attached to proteins, lipids and, yes, RNA on cell surfaces and are sometime free on their own, and they are “read” by glycan binding proteins that orchestrate cell-cell interactions and more
