NCRST launched Namibia’s R&D Report 2021/2022. GERD increased to 0.73% of GDP from 0.34% in 2013/2014. Government’s R&D spending declined significantly, but other domestic & external funders contributed. African countries committed to 1%, but continental avg is below 0.50%.

Good News: Namibia’s R&D expenditure more than doubled to 0.73% of the GDP. This is a drastic increase from 0.34% in 2013/2014 to 2021/2022. Likewise, the number of researchers also increased drastically with women comprising 50% of researchers. Read more on the infographic.

I will be a keynote speaker on ‘Research, Development & Innovation in the Era of AI’ at the annual Global Research Councils (GRC) conference’s side event for the MENA region. NCRST is a Research Council and a member of the GRC.

Prof. Peters, the CEO of NCRST rapporteured a session on 'Making Research more Sustainable' at the Global Research Councils Meeting. Additionally, she visited the OCCR - Oeschger Centre for Climate Change Research in Bern, Switzerland for a technical visit.

The National Commission on Research, Science and Technology (NCRST) has launched the Namibia Sustainable Bioeconomy Strategy 2024-2029 this morning.

The National Bioeconomy Strategy aims to establish a framework of programs and initiatives to address multifaceted challenges identified as critical. It also seeks to leverage spillover benefits from various sectors, including agriculture, environment, manufacturing, and health.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anicia Peters (she/her), CEO of NCRST, highlighted the alignment of the Strategy with the The Global Goals. 3/4
