While these coins were intended to be produced in larger quantities, the dies were not actually completed until a few days after George III's death on 29 January 1820. So only 25 were minted to serve as a sort of memorial to the dead king.

Annoying. Needed to buy a Guardian for my mother….. two shop have copies but refused to sell them because they are in the system as going back to the suppliers. Why can’t they sell me one and change the numbers?

Bite marks from a lion on a man’s skeleton, excavated from a 1,800-year-old cemetery on the outskirts of York, provide the first physical evidence of human-animal combat in the Roman empire, new research claims. theguardian.com/uk-news/2025/a…

This is shocking. I hope that one day, at least some of the collections will be tracked down and returned. #looting #heritagecrime #archaeology bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

A wonderful night at Stonehenge last night where for the first time Clive and I saw the most northerly moonset - after months of attempts. But it has thrown up MANY more questions for our lunar research! Thanks to @englishheritage for facilitating. #archaeology #lunarstandstill

Haven’t posted much recently. Will try and catch up on my backlog…… Most recent, bank holiday dogwalk in Somerset, with beautiful Brean Down in the background.

A memorial to “Mary” - much else gone. I’ve never ever seen a gravestone weather like this before. In the churchyard of the mighty Amesbury Abbey, Wiltshire. #archaeology #church #churchcrawling

Is this five-sided church apse in my village the remains of an Anglo-Saxon church? If so, it was much altered later (including the crypt which housed the remains of the medieval Bishop John Carpenter). The five sides are more apparent inside the church. #saxon #archaeology
