I'm hiring a postdoc for a collaborative U.S. National Science Foundation & Natural Environment Research Council-supported project! Our US/UK team examines phenotypic and functional diversification in early ray-finned fishes. Work draws on 3D models of mandibles from μCT and synchrotron tomography. For centuries, paleontologists have had to rely on intuition re whether reconstructed joint poses "look right." Today in Nature Communications: we created a way to formalize & test that intuition, & discovered that articular surface interactions distinguish locomotor poses in dinosaurs 🧵
Congratulations to our SICB Phylogenetics and Comparative Biology BSP 2024 winners Devin Mendoza (poster), Alexus Roberts Hugghis (talk) and Shih-Na Liu (talk honorable mention)

Have you ever watched a fish eat and thought, “I need to see this 1,000x more”? Well, my colleagues and I did. In a new study, we use 1,110 high-speed videos to examine diversity/evolution of prey capture in 300 cichlid species from 4 adaptive radiations journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.108…
I am OVER THE MOON that our paper is out at Am Nat today! We find phylogeny & biogeographic contingency shape functional diversity in cichlid radiations It's my first as co-first aut. & Christopher Martinez was an A+ co-lead. We had an amazing team-I am so proud of what we achieved
