"We will continue to miss every meaningful opportunity to reduce or prevent alcohol harm in New Zealand if we continue to allow unbridled access to power for harmful commodity industries." - Andrew Galloway, Executive Director, Alcohol Healthwatch. rnz.co.nz/news/in-depth/…

Alcohol is NZ’s most harmful drug, costing $9.1b a year. Restricting outlet numbers reduces harm, but only if we know where outlets are. Right now, we don’t. Alcohol Healthwatch phcc.org.nz/briefing/invis…

Most of the harm from alcohol is to people other than the drinker. E.g. road deaths, FASD, child maltreatment, family violence. But when we understand all the harms (including cancer), and how our environments are saturated in alcohol – we can better protect the people we love.

Many of us are concerned about the harm alcohol causes: social harms like violence, health issues like addiction, and we now know even small amounts over time can damage our DNA, which can lead to cancer.

Most people want our kids to be free from pressures to drink. We can put higher standards on alcohol that will help protect our kids from harm.
