Not everything since 2016 has been bad: the #kakapo population has grown by 100% since then! 252 are alive today. #kakapo2022 #conservation Pic: Deidre Vercoe

Mass pheasant releases linked to severe declines in reptile populations if only there was some way of not releasing obscene numbers of non-native birds into already badly degraded ecosystems in order to kill them for fun birdguides.com/articles/mass-…

Has anyone told them this song is about some sailors who attack and try to take possession of a whale, discover that it's more than a match for them, it destroys their gear, and the sailors get into a pointless, endless struggle and start having serious supply issues? #wellerman

Phenomenal. Bar-tailed Godwit has broken its own record: a first-year bird (five months old!) has flown 13,560 km—just shy of the direct flight limit of a Boeing 787—from Alaska to Tasmania, seemingly non-stop, in just 11 days (avg. speed: c.51 km/hr). facebook.com/43794949621875…

An excellent #urbanwildlife encounter on my post-work wander on Friday. Spotted a seal from Albert Bridge and I'd say we shared a moment

This really is an extraordinary graphic. While we agonise over the impact of releasing a few Beavers back in the landscape, about 50 million non-native Pheasants are released into the environment each year with not much debate at all.

A great Welsh winter adventure over the weekend. I spent the week frantically sending out messages mountaineering friends trying to find a partner. Ben came through for me and we climbed Idwal Stream (II/III) together then marched on over Glyder Fawr and Fach in a whiteout ❄️

EMPTY LEDGES. First visit to North Sutor colony revealed the extreme impact bird flu, storms and rising sea temps have had on seabirds. Cormorants down by 36% to only 86 nests, shags by 60% to 60 nests and Guillemots down by a massive 83% on last year.

What has happened to all the Isle of May guillemots? The first egg was the latest ever but adjusting for that we should still be peak laying now and the cliffs are terrifyingly empty. Even those that have laid don't seem committed and are losing their eggs at an alarming rate.1/2
