Ok, I’ll admit it. My program director was right, I shouldn’t have skipped clinic so much as a general surgery resident.

Can’t tell you how many times I hear patients, healthcare professionals, and especially other surgeons described as “a lot” or “extra” when the person describing them really means that woman advocates for herself, her family members, or her patients.

Trust women to know what is in their best interests.

Nothing irks me at work more than hearing “Dr. FirstName” over the ED loud speaker because someone doesn’t want to say Dr. Tsaousis. That’s my professional NAME and it’s important!!!!!!! My family and I deserve the same degree of respect as those called Smith and Jones. Period.

Growing up I spent over two decades getting lectured by well meaning family and friends about how I needed to prioritize finding a husband over becoming a surgeon. Luckily I didn’t listen.

Imagine if we spoke to young men the way we speak to young women and told them their value comes from being husbands/fathers and not from professional accomplishments. We need to stop assuming and start rooting for women to achieve the goals they set for themselves.
