On this day in 1808, a popular protest against Spanish Prime Minister Manuel Godoy turned violent. The resulting "Tumult of Aranjuez" ended with Godoy arrested and removed from power, and King Charles IV abdicating the throne in favor of his son, who became Ferdinand VII.
