In Ireland there is confusion about what constitutes for some bizarre reason given we have numerous strategies and policies on the matter (none implemented of course 🙄) We have a long way to go..

Please please can therapy staffing for older adults on inpatient hospital wards be sufficiently resourced - it would make a MASSIVE difference to the flow of patients by preventing hospital acquired deconditioning and thus the reliance on community services.

Rehabilitation can fix the existential problem of 1/3 of patients getting sicker in hospital.

Rehabilitation in tandem with, and especially after, an acute care episode can unblock our hospitals.

Not “step down”.
Not “convalescence”.
Not “transitional care”.

Rehabilitation.

- Renal patients don’t get “some dialysis”
- Cancer patients don’t get “a bit of chemotherapy”
- Septic patients don’t get “a few antibiotics”

Rehabilitation after a stroke is dose dependent. It gets people out of hospitals, back to their homes, their families, their lives.

Director General of SFI, Professor Philip Nolan, names ageing as one of three key challenges for the State's research centres👏

We are delighted there is more focus on ageing research & the urgency of underinvesting in this crucial area is understood.

Absolutely, given the opportunity improves independence, self efficacy and quality of life thereby reducing social care pressures and needs! Patients deserve the chance to rehab and and should be supported to offer this routinely
