During my visit in Puerto Rico, I joined William Rodríguez-Rodríguez & Autoridad para el Financiamiento de la Vivienda to tour Mirador Las Casas Apartment, a 294-unit apartment complex being renovated with HUD disaster recovery funds. This project will bring updated, affordable rental homes to hundreds of families in San Juan.

I was delighted to see the smiles on the faces of homeowners and their families in Puerto Rico who have returned home after their homes were completely destroyed. With the help of HUD disaster recovery funds, their homes were reconstructed with solar panels to be more resilient.

This funding will make homes across the country more energy efficient and resilient to harsh weather for the families HUD serves. Through GRRP, HUD is investing in transitioning housing that was built in the 1970s into this century as it prepares for a resilient future.

Announcement out this AM on new tools to help convert empty commercial buildings into housing, and to promote transit-oriented development. This is part of our gov't wide effort to boost housing supply, even as we call on Congress to invest in housing. whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…

When I visited Maui in September, I saw firsthand the damage inflicted by the devastating #MauiFires. The resilient people of Maui need support as they recover. We are assuring homeowners in Maui that HUD is here to support them as they navigate next steps with their family.

I spoke at AARP Livable Communities & NHC’s forum on building livable communities for all generations. With programs like Choice Neighborhoods & Section 202 senior housing program, HUD supports communities so everyone, especially older Americans, can live with dignity & grace.

This #MLKDay, I was honored to celebrate a day of service with @americorps, @cityyear, & over 180 volunteers at Ketcham Elementary School in Washington DC. It was great to see people come together in Dr. King's memory & spirit to help build strong, equitable communities for all.

Thank you to Mayor Joe Hogsett, the Indianapolis Continuum of Care community, and all the volunteers for welcoming me to their city for their annual Point-in-Time (PIT) count, the only national survey of the number of people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. 🧵

Today in Philadelphia, I announced that HUD is making available $115 million to support affordable housing for our nation’s seniors. This funding furthers the Biden-Harris Admin's commitment to increasing housing supply—especially for those who most need it. #InvestingInAmerica

“I’ve cut red tape so more builders can get federal financing…” - President Biden #SOTU HUD has focused on streamlining our rules so homes (to rent and purchase) can be built quickly. We are also investing in new housing types, and working with communities on zoning reforms.

These grants affirm HUD’s commitment to providing safe and healthy homes. By addressing and eliminating lead hazards in our nation’s homes, we are not only protecting the well-being of our children but also investing in the future prosperity of our families.

Every American deserves affordable housing — yet in communities across our nation, the cost of housing is too high. Today, I announced that President Biden and I are investing $85 million to remove barriers to building affordable housing, lowering rents, and buying a home.
