In our talk at 'Globalizing Sociolinguistics 3' we discussed two issues: (a) how sign language choice is constructed in multilingual sign language communities in ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ช ๐Ÿ‡ญ๐Ÿ‡บ ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น & ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช & (b) how sign language choice is related to language inequality. London cohort: 11yo (SAT) multilingual learners lagged significantly behind monolinguals, but simultaneous multilinguals did not. 16yo (GCSE) simultaneous multilinguals outperformed monolinguals significantly and multilingual learners had caught up with monolinguals.

Last night was amazing! ๐Ÿ“ทCheck out highlights from Rachel O'Neill and Dr Audrey Cameronโ€™s 175th Anniversary Lecture, "Exploring the History and Current Research of British Sign Language at Moray House." A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the event such a success!

Peter Zalan Romanek at #ICL2024 aimed 1) to share some findings from the interviews with 12 L1 sign linguists on grammar description approaches from his PhD, and 2) to present an emerging practice with a grammar description corpus to describe the Estonian SL at EVKUR - Estonian Sign Language Research Lab. It's sad to think that my monolingual mum stopped my paternal grandmother from speaking in French and Maltese to me when I was a toddler, because mum didn't know any better in late 1960s Australia (she believed it would confuse me and would be bad for my language development) :-(

This anti-lecture sentiment is dire for higher Ed, and honestly for critical thinking. A good lecture is dynamic and interactive, shows how to build and make an argument, is compelling, is a space to think

New linguistic evidence that the variety of International Sign investigated in this study is sufficiently shared to be called 'International Sign Language'. I've seen deaf signers vehemently disagree about whether it should be called 'IS' or 'ISL': interesting times!

Itโ€™s really useful to know a little American Sign Language, but I donโ€™t think Iโ€™ll ever get used to how some ASL signers do their sign for โ€˜twoโ€™.
