A4: Lack of access to these essential things is often what drives people towards criminal behavior. Without access to the things that society deems foundational to being a “good citizen”, those who have served their time face an almost impossible reentry task #SecondChanceMonth

A6: Policies that limit a persons ability to be a fully engaged & invested citizen of their community do nothing to protect public safety. These barriers are intended to be part of the punishment for a crime and should be scrutinized for their effectiveness. #SecondChanceMonth

A7: Volunteer in your local schools, mentor members of your community who need it, support the amazing nonprofits out there doing great work, educate yourself about how the CJ system works, vote for people advancing effective policy, ask “why” more often. #SecondChanceMonth

Our new data analysis for the first time compares recidivism of individuals released under the First Step Act with those of a similar profile over the same tracking period. The 37% decline in recidivism suggests expanding programs & offering credit for completing them is working.
