Angry referring doc: You didn't call w/an update on my pt!

Me: You're right. I'm sorry. Here's my cell- call anytime.

Less angry referring: OK... thanks.

Lesson: when you own your mistake, no excuses, you forge trust and credibility.

In cultures of politeness, dissent is a threat to social harmony. People nod and smile even if they disagree, and silence fuels groupthink.

In cultures of integrity, dissent is a sign of commitment to quality. People voice their views, and respectful debate improves decisions.

So if Walmart can’t make healthcare profitable, maybe we should consider medicine differently than retail? 🤔

Had a conversation with a coworker in her 50s…

She told me there was so much she wanted to do & see when she was younger

But she put them off by telling herself she’d do them when she had more money.

Every time there’s a fire drill at one of the hospitals where I work, I stomp around and start chanting “Rescue, Alarm, Contain, Evacuate, Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep!” and no one likes it but I’ll still keep doing it.

A friend of mine is being constantly told to “move faster” & see more patients.

Let’s be clear: It is impossible to provide high quality of care to patients if we don’t have time with them. Listening takes time. Building rapport takes time. Making complex decisions takes time.

Never feel embarrassed about this.

Embrace it.

As a medical student, I shared your sentiment & almost let the system have its way.

I’ve learned to be ok with all of the emotions in the MICU & encourage that safe space as an MICU attending.
