1st grade experimenting with changing variables of weight, surface area, and shape to make their "snowflakes" hover. Awesome perseverance as multiple iterations lead to success! #ecs #BrooklineInnovates

"It feels so light!" Grades 5 and 6 thinking of gears as levers. A ratio of 5:1 in the length of the input to output levers will generate 5x the torque! Useful if you are trying to design a 3D printed car powerful enough to climb a hill . . . #BrooklineEd #BrooklineInnovates #ECS

Trade-off for greater force with a longer lever? Longer distance traveled! These levers have a 1:5 ratio. Measuring one "John head" with the long side = 20cm. On the short side, 4cm. We get 5x force but must travel 5x the distance! #BrooklineEd #ECS #BrooklineInnovates

Continuing talking about rotation in KG. Students are creating their own custom 3D printed Legos to make "Beyblades" during choice time. #BrooklineInnovates #ECS

3D cars: Sometimes students can be each other's best resource. Trouble shooting challenges we are having with car design based on collective experience so far. #BrooklineEd #ECS #BrooklineInnovates

Some third graders have been extending their multiplication skills by building scale models of library furniture in preparation for a library redesign. Authentic work! #BrooklineInnovates #ECS

Valentine's Day "squishy circuits" in 1st grade today! Students started with a model and then got creative with the principles they learned! Some really had to test and retest to get them to work! Keywords: current, circuit, conductor, insulator. #ecs #BrooklineInnovates

Amazing work by the Black History Month Committee and all of the classrooms who contributed to the Black History Month Alphabet. Such an impressive celebration!

More work with grade 5 today as a precursor to the windmill design challenge. In this picture, we are looking at how like charges repelling can be translated to rotational motion. #ECS #BrooklineInnovates

All groups have moving cars! Ratios of students' gearboxes are ranging from 3:2 all the way up to 9:1. On to wheel design! This group has been analyzing the cause of their car's heavy favoritism for left-hand turns! Tons of perseverance. #ECS #BrooklineInnovates #BrooklineEd

7th graders started working on their visuals for drawing attention to their argument essays-infographics and videos. Many thanks to graphic design experts Marcy Sacks, Mary Allen, and Andy Dean for bringing their expertise and authenticity to the work. #BrooklineInnovates #ECS

Grade 7 infographics are coming out really well! Students have taken on some serious issues. Students have been making great use of design principles and web-based software. Looking forward to seeing the rest roll of the presses! #ecs #BrooklineInnovates

Custom tire design using flexible filament is happening in grades 5 and 6! Students have tested their bare wheels for average velocity and are now design custom tires. They will be comparing performance and making design changes based on the results. #BrooklineEd #ECS

MiniMo is operational! Baker's Mini Mobile Makerspace is up and running. Teaching is a design learning process in itself: This new cart is easier for teachers to move from class to class and can be stocked with all necessary tools and supplies. Here we go gr. 5 windmills! #ecs
