I wonder how many #firstgen kids experience a shift from rejection to reclamation of their cultural upbringing as they age? For example: how many of us suppress(ed) an accent throughout our academic career?

I keep seeing people ask why academics are leaving. Why students are disengaged. Why staff are stand-offish. Why faculty seem antagonistic. It's this. Everyone is tired. That's it. It's not hard to understand. We're tired, and we don't have the capacity to keep going like this.

When I was a student, I thought that my dissertation would be my life's work. Now, even the thought of opening it back up makes me laugh. Graduate students, try to remember: this is just the beginning. Your career likely will not be defined by the work you do in your PhD.

Remember to budget time in to read and just think. Such an important part of the writing process!
