It is very important to continue this work since new strains might continue to evolve and deletions of certain genes in the poxviral genome might change the transmission pattern of the virus

Out of the 51 individuals, 24 (47%) were professional sex workers (PSWs), while five (10%) were gold miners, 6 (12%) were students, and four (8%) were farmers; the remaining individual occupations were unknown.

📌Earlier this month, we had a kickoff meeting in Tanzania for our Great-Life project (Linking Infectious disease Front-liners’ control Efforts with central public health authorities in The African Great Lakes Region).

Our paper on persistent SARS-CoV-2 infections (PIs) is now published in nature!
Some key findings:
- PIs are much more common than we thought
- PIs are associated with higher odds of long COVID
- Reinfections with genetically similar viruses are rare
