Brilliant birding day Kananaskis Alberta Parks today. The snows this week concentrated songbirds on the limited bare patches - thankfully midges were emerging from wetlands for feed.

April 2nd at Saskatoon Island Prov. Park west of Grande Prairie, a nice day brought out Gray Commas and Mourning Cloaks. Pussy Willows were nice to see too.

Warm enough today that the tiny Dialictus bees are out having a good time on Aeonium plants. The wind was just calm enough I didn’t resort to slow motion video. For scale, a honey bee on the same flowers. [Alameda, CA 4/16/24]

🚨🐝 FUN SCIENCE ALERT! 🐝🚨Hibernating bumblebee queens can survive up to a WEEK underwater!! The discovery stems from an oversight leading to these tough little queens defying the odds, emerging alive after an accidental underwater stint! 🌊🐝

Our results show the remarkable ability of diapausing queens to withstand submersion underwater for up to 1 wk, indicating their adaptations to survive periods of flooding (likely to happen increasingly frequently under ) when hibernating in the wild

The University of Saskatchewan 2024 Images of Research contest and my photo of the polar bears received runner up in the 'from the field' category.

Seeing moms with triplets used to be fairly common at about 10% of the population but is pretty rare now.
