Here is what the M4.7 #MalibuEarthquake looked like when it was detected by our DAS array near Ridgecrest, CA. The bold horizontal line represents the strain detected on the multitude of channels along the length of the fiber optic cable. View the live DAS feed at:

A hypothesis-testing paper out in JGR Oceans! Fastest review process! Using oceanographic models and real data, we confirm seafloor scattering as the key factor in generating abyssal T-waves. We also find warming in the Equatorial Atlantic. Details here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.10…

Its #SpookySeason so in lieu of #FieldPhotoFriday this week, we have a story about the old Kresge Lab by one of our emeritus professors Tom Heaton. The place was old and creepy to say the least, there were parts dug into the mountain so seismic equipment could be on bedrock which

As a first-time voter, I just flew from California to Pennsylvania to get the attention I deserve... And give a talk too, in the geoscience department of Penn State Penn State University! Big thanks to Tieyuan Zhu Tieyuan Zhu for the invitation.

New study alert! The 6 subevents of the 2024 Mw 7.5 Noto Peninsula earthquake show complex rupture pattern—a slow start, an onshore westward break, then an offshore rupture 20s later that fueled the tsunami! Potential for better tsunami warnings🌊 more: doi.org/10.1029/2024GL…

DAS meets the Moho! New Science Adv paper w/ Zhongwen Zhan. We developed a method for finding Moho reflections in DAS data. One EQ can yield 10s of km of fine-scale Moho depth estimates. We used it on SoCal EQs and learned about the Garlock, Coso, and more doi.org/10.1126/sciadv…

#MyanmarEarthquake may be a long supershear event (~5 km/s, ~350 km rupture), evidenced by S wave arrivals on the strong motion data, which explains strong shaking felt far away. Supershear amplifies damage, calls for urgent rescue needs & infrastructure strengthening.
