China and international tribunals, three developments. This week, Beijing 1) implied moderate support for ICC arrest order; 2) marginalized ITLOS climate opinion ("no new obligations outside UNFCCC"); 3) blocked Guatemala ☕️imports over Taiwan ties (prima facie WTO-challengeable)

I feel like many in the West are not familiar with the version of Confucius that says things like "when the lord is insulted, the minister must die", and then has people executed (albeit in the context of high-stakes diplomatic encounter involving alleged assassination attempts)

Great piece by Ryan Martínez Mitchell in CILDialogues on "China’s engagement with the ITLOS climate change advisory proceedings and its strategic formalism in international law" - grateful for the nod to my work on legal statecraft also! cil.nus.edu.sg/blogs/chinas-e…

Worth noting that China's Third Plenum Decision language on US sanctions, PRC "counter-sanctions", extraterritorial jurisdiction, etc., didn't fall under the section on foreign-related law but rather the one on "modernizing national security capabilities"

In 1955, Chiang Kai-shek's Taiwan faced major crises. But he found time to send the following memo to his education minister: "as to the necessity of a Hegel Research Society ... it must be quickly set up, for it will greatly aid development of anti-communist thought..."
