A Red Sox PD member once told me that he knew it was time for an exit strategy when a newly hired (by Bloom) minor league field coordinator declared in their first meeting that “we no longer coach fundamentals.” Ok then.

An obvious potential solution to these Red Sox issues is to hire a GM with great people skills to work under Breslow. I don't know Thad Levine, but colleagues rave about his people skills. Promoting from within would likely compound the culture challenges they already face.

Weekend baseball thought: The best managers I worked with didn’t avoid mistakes - they learned from them faster than anyone else. That’s the real leadership skill. Not perfection, but continuous improvement while helping your team do the same.

The best front office decisions combine everything: analytics, observations from scouts and coaches, medicals, and more. Analytics kept us grounded in objectivity when others were reacting emotionally to last night's game. The smartest person in the room IS the room.

Interesting to see the King Felix to Mil story as we (Bos) also got close on a 3-team trade with Adrian Gonzalez going from SD to Sea, Felix going to Bos, and prospects (Reddick, Masterson, etc.) going to SD. Jack Z slept on it and then decided he couldn't move the King.

Many sports fans want their manager/head coach to be fiery and maybe even call their team out publicly. I find it interesting because most of them probably wouldn't want to work for someone who crashes out when things get difficult.

Saying Reynolds doesn't care about winning is a stretch. With a 9-figure deal and a limited no-trade, his agent should suggest teams who spend, as they can negotiate waiving the no-trade. Btw, 4 of the 6 teams with the best odds to win the WS are not on his no-trade list.

Having data isn't the same as having insight. Every MLB team has access to the same Statcast numbers. The difference is how they turn information into actionable intelligence AND implement those insights. Example: knowing a hitter struggles with high fastballs is insight.

Draft rooms are pure leadership under pressure. Months of preparation. Competing opinions from scouts and analysts. Clock ticking. Careers on the line. The GMs who succeed aren't the ones who make perfect picks. They're the ones with clear processes for making decisions with

Can the Pirates only compete with a salary cap? If these numbers are accurate, they rank 20th in revenue but 27th in payroll/revenue. The median spending is 47% of revenue, so the Pirates are $41 M short. Why doesn't the Nutting family sell 49% of the club for $600+ M and then

Draft day reminds me of our 2004 debate about Dustin Pedroia. One veteran scout: "He's 5'9", pudgy, and losing his hair. Show me successful major leaguers who looked like that in college." We drafted him anyway at #65. The best talent decisions come from seeing value where

Our best 2018 draft pick almost ruined our entire process. Round 7: Someone suggested Jarren Duran, who we had ranked for rounds 9-10. No new intel. Just gut feeling. Result: Best pick of the draft. Problem: Good results from a bad process can be toxic. People think process
