A beautiful section of Roman Wall! 😍 ✨✨✨ The Romans first came to York in 71AD Stone walls & gates replaced the original wooden palisades & ditches of the fortress Few remains survive of the structure that occupied a 50-acre site Some stonework can still be seen above ground!

St Denys is dedicated to the patron saint of France🇫🇷 The church- which has a fine Norman doorway- was originally much larger, but was struck by cannon fire in the English Civil War and hit by lightning!⚡ Inside, is perhaps the oldest glass in York, dating back to the 13c🤯

The Shambles is York’s only street mentioned by name in the Domesday Book; an area in towns associated with butchers🥩 Meat was placed on shelves in front of shops & hung from hooks outside🤯 Protruding timber-framed fronts protected both the walls & the meat from the elements🌞

Walmgate Bar is York's most complete medieval gateway, retaining its outer defence or Barbican🤯 The fortified passageway still has a portcullis and wooden doors, perhaps installed in the 14c📜 Most of the structure's stonework is 14c but the original arch dates from the 1100's⛏️

Lendal Bridge provided a vital path to the Minster area from York’s first railway station in 1863🚂 The structure stretches 53 meters across the Ouse & was designed by Thomas Page🌉 Made from cast iron, the bridge replaced a ferry service, used by Florence Nightingale in 1852🩺
