The A17 road that runs through Garwick sits atop this extinct channel (roddon); note, the Old English name Swineshead for the next parish means ‘the head of the creek’ & C14 dating from the A17 there indicates marine conditions present from the Late Roman/early post-Roman period.

The death of another great early medieval scholar ( so soon after the passing of Jinty Nelson). I was fortunate enough to go on one of Eamonn’s tours of Rome, a truly memorable experience with such an entertaining and learned guide.

Very rare Anglo-Saxon memorial at Whitchurch, Hampshire It shows Christ holding a book & has an inscription across the top saying ‘Here lies the body of Frithburga, buried in peace’ She may have been a nun at nearby Wherwell Abbey

The Norman font of St. Mary’s Church at Kirkburn in East Yorkshire. Simplistic, but rather wonderful! 📸 My own. #FontsOnFriday #Medieval #Kirkburn

Today is #Calennig, also known as the #WelshNewYear. Traditionally, it is celebrated by the giving of gifts, in particular skewered apples stuck with greenery and cloves. Check out some Welsh archaeology to celebrate. 1/2
