Thank you @GavNewlandsSNP for highlighting why the #OnlineHarms Bill is so important. He is absolutely right, social media companies are doing no way near enough to protect individuals and society at large!

Facebook are on course for record breaking profit, in a year where they’ve done the absolute minimal to stop the spread of misinformation during a pandemic. When are we going to see real punishments for business that profit from misinformation Oliver Dowden Matt Hancock?

Millions of Brits are sill able to access false information about vaccines. Head of the CCDH, Imran Ahmed, said "social media has given these liars unprecedented reach... to speak to people they would never have been able to give access to before” itv.com/news/2020-12-1…

“despite pledges by the tech companies, our research found that only 1 of the 27 biggest anti-vaccine sites has been taken down.” Still waiting for the big tech companies and government to take a stance against profiting off misinformation.

Since April, we have had over 60 young volunteers trained by Restless Development and CCDH to identify, report and respond to #misinformation being shared on social media. We have shown the power young people can have in tackling global issues!

Social media companies have known for years that there are groups on their sites which are a breeding ground for election misinformation. They let it get out of hand and failed to act. Again. How can we keep on allowing these companies to self-regulate?
