Looking beyond any partisanship, I think VGBC and Ken Chen showed enough concrete evidence that stuff in Dr Alan's statement was flat-out false to call the entire narrative into question. If his intent was to uplift the Smash scene, he miserably failed and needs to reflect on it.

Was gonna suggest something similar. Either force a character for you and opponent. Or, provide a dummy or CPU opponent instead of having the other person in your game, while preserving connection experience? To hide their character and prevent you from estimating their skill.

May take a while but IMO phob is the future of melee controllers. Eventually, the design will get refined and they won't be so difficult to make. Issues like consistency and durability will be addressed. Why? Bc it's open-source and the community has good and honest intentions.
