#ASOI2024Conf words are important. People blame themselves and this has implications for people seeking help. We have decades of research to say that healthcare professionals have implicit and explicit weight bias. Particularly doctors.

#ASOI2024Conf weight stigma is an independent determinant of health, across the weight spectrum but more common in higher weight. Many of us have weight bias, closely linked to our social status, age, gender. Morr conservative values = higher weight bias.

#ASOI2024Conf shaming people does not motivate people to be healthy. People avoid healthcare and don't ask for help. Weight is not a behaviour. We need to be more careful how we talk to patients in healthcare settings.
