An absolute worst case scenario is about to unfold in Jamaica. #Melissa has shown no signs of weakening overnight as it is still an absolute behemoth barrelling down on the island. This could be the strongest ATL landfalling hurricane since 1935 at this rate.

This is the most insane dropsonde Hurricane Hunters have ever recorded with a WL of 188kts and a max of 219kts aloft... #Melissa

It's always sobering when you can see a landmass through the eye of a hurricane, let alone one of the strongest in the history of the Atlantic. #Melissa

The first major lake effect event of the season is set to unfold across Southern Lake Michigan this weekend. Major event is expected across NW IN/SW MI but major questions remain how far west the band is and whether Chicago proper can see any major impacts from it.

Pretty cool evolution of a mesovortex over Lake Michigan. To a degree it looks similar to an EWRC you see in tropical cyclones as it transitions to a larger “eye”. In any case there’s some neat PBL interactions between the warm lake and much colder atmosphere.
