Doris Procter, the daughter of a tailor and confectioner was born in Settle in 1892. She volunteered for V.A.D. service in 1914. She was based at a Military Hospital in Leicester where she caught influenza in December 1918 and died OTD. Two brothers served; one died.

Finally the rather poignant family portrait is the wife & 5 children of Lance Cpl Joseph Smith, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), killed in the trenches near Lesboeufs 25 December 1916 but never found. Commemorated on the Thiepval memorial astreetnearyou.org/person/813004/…
