Hi folks, we're back in City Hall for the full Council discussion of the budget. It's going to be terrible.

This budget is a disaster for community, for community-led safety, and for anyone other than cops and concrete. AGAIN.

This budget is based on 2 insidious lies: first, that securitization and police (in libraries, in transit, etc) make people safer. The research is clear that this is not true.

The second lie is that there's nothing else we could do- that we have to accept that collateral damage of this budget, which makes people vulnerable by pushing them out of public spaces and limiting their options for keeping themselves safe.

The research is clear, community voices are united: we need to invest in care and community-led strategies if we want to address the organized abandonment of this (and decades of) budget(s).

Shout out to the Millennium Library Community Working Group for years of shaping and fighting for $ for Community Connections and Community Safety Hosts.

The biggest financial crime happening in Winnipeg is that the cops just got an $8.3 million increase in city funding, bringing its total budget to $327 million in 2023. That money is stolen from libraries, transit, safe consumption sites, recreation, housing and so much more.

It's been a real joy working on Spaßbremse, and I've been so thankful for the opportunity to talk with and learn from some wonderful people :) Also taking a lil break from Twitter as I focus on finishing my degree and figuring out what to do next, but I'll be back!
