In our feature on Sakurao, makers of Togouchi Whisky, in the Whisky & Spirits of Japan no.2, we also wrote about their fine gins. Their approach is to make a reasonably priced product with high quality rather than aim for “super-premium”, in their own words.

If you do visit Matsui Shuzo in Kyoto to try their craft gin and rum, which we reported on in WSJJ2, you shouldn’t pass on their delicious sake, either. The company, founded in 1726, has some wonderful brands and they’re available from the shop.

MARS Distillery, which we featured in great depth in our last issue of the Whisky & Spirits Journal of Japan, was awarded the best single malt Japanese whisky for its Tsunuki 2024 edition at the World Whisky Awards. Congratulations! If you’ve tried it, what did you like about it?
