On D Day he was on a tank landing ship just offshore from Omaha Beach waiting his turn to storm ashore - shells screaming overhead - fired by allied battleships behind him & taking fire from German bunkers on the beach in front..

His units objective - to capture St Lo. Fighting was intense, the Normandy hedgerows giving deadly cover to German machine guns & artillery. On the day his best friend was killed right next to him and his company captain also killed, he himself was shot in the neck. 4/5

‘The world is a rather dangerous place, and it shouldn’t be …  after what we've all experienced.’ A D-Day veteran urges the world to learn from the experiences of soldiers like him, as they return to Normandy 80 years after the pivotal World War 2 battle.

So sad to hear the passing of consummate journalist Kim Sengupta. A war zone original - always the best of company in the hardest of places. A friend to so many on the road - his chuckle, smile and wonderful presence will remain fondly in our memories. independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…

During the women’s 1500m medal ceremony tonight, I was next to a couple wearing “Team Georgia Bell” T-shirts. After the ceremony, I asked the woman how she was connected to Georgia. “I’m her mother.” The two of them soft-spoken, but obviously bursting with pride.
