We recently sampled this huge dead chestnut tree at Waterloo. Some sources claim that a line of trees right here played a pivotal role in the historic battle of 1815. Using its tree rings, we can discover if this giant was actually alive at the time of the battle.

Last week, the wood anatomy students got some hands-on experience making increment cores from an old willow at our campus.

Native species plantations could contribute in the short term to restoring degraded forest landscapes with high carbon storage potential. Brice Djiofack recently completed a field campaign in DR Congo evaluating the success of native species plantations from the FORETS project.

Woodlab colleague Sara just returned from 3 months in the field! During this campaign in the DRC, the team installed 27 permanent sampling plots in young fallow fields. The data will help to understand the effect of repeated clearing on soil fertility and forest productivity

A delegation from the Nanjing Forestry University paid a visit to the UGent-Woodlab last week. The delegation consisted of, among others, the dean and responsibles for international interactions. We discussed future international interactions and current research topics.
