We recently sampled this huge dead chestnut tree at Waterloo. Some sources claim that a line of trees right here played a pivotal role in the historic battle of 1815. Using its tree rings, we can discover if this giant was actually alive at the time of the battle.

Last Thursday, we had a century-old visitor at #UGCT. In the framework of the master thesis of Febe Hofman, we scanned the 17th-century wooden statue Barry. Check out the news item by Kelly Blok at nhnieuws.nl/nieuws/327431/… for additional information and a short movie.

Native species plantations could contribute in the short term to restoring degraded forest landscapes with high carbon storage potential. Brice Djiofack recently completed a field campaign in DR Congo evaluating the success of native species plantations from the FORETS project.

Woodlab colleague Sara just returned from 3 months in the field! During this campaign in the DRC, the team installed 27 permanent sampling plots in young fallow fields. The data will help to understand the effect of repeated clearing on soil fertility and forest productivity

Taking a tree ring core from a large solitary oak in Sweden. Solitary trees are an important part of our urban ecosystems. We sampled this and many others to better understand their reaction to droughts and heat waves. #trees #treerings #wood #nature #science

ACTREAL (actreal.ugent.be) is about measuring density on wooden cores taken from bristlecone pines – an iconic species known to be the longest-living tree on our planet. This is highly informative about past temperatures – more so than the tree-ring width. FWO
