At our Montana sanctuary, female wolf, Tess, and her dad, Jerry, search vigorously for their scent enrichment (anchovy oil sprayed on a chunk of old bone). Time & again they step right over it, and time & again their noses are right on top of it, but they can’t seem to dial in!

#ThrowbackThursday Pahana (1999-2012) was rescued from deplorable conditions under private ownership in 2009. He initially struggled to socialize with his companion, Mehina, but after becoming more settled in his surroundings, Pahana grew into a confident and playful wolf 💜

We are sad to share that Guy passed away in June from complications of old age. At 15, he lived a long and healthy life. Guy enjoyed teasing his neighbors and was a calm, handsome observer. We could always see his white fur & thoughtful eyes as we came and went from the sanctuary

Layla's tree kill count stands at 1. Last year, she dug at a 15-foot conifer until it upended & has recently turned her attention to a larger Douglas fir...animal care staff leaped into action to backfill the dirt & hopefully prevent future digging by placing logs around the base

Shedding season commences every year as the days get longer and hotter. For most, it leads to wild and wacky hair days... for male wolfdog, Mesa, it meant unwelcome interference with his singing. #wolfsanctuary #wolf #wolves #wolfdogs #caughtoncamera #summer #sheddingseason

During a recent enclosure check, animal care staff noticed that Mexican wolf M1430 (Aspen) was heavily targeting a tree near the front of his enclosure with urine. While some wolves scent mark more than others, feces & urine are commonly used to communicate territory boundaries.

While many of us have heard these numbers, this image provides a helpful visualization of just how much of the planet’s mammal biomass consists of humans and livestock. Only a sobering 2% of mammal biomass on Earth is comprised of terrestrial wild species, like wolves. #wolfhaven

Sometimes when the telephone rings, you just don’t feel like answering it. During a recent rest, Mexican wolves M1458 (Hodari) and F1632 (Sage) reacted little to a sanctuary-wide howl. Sage did finally... begrudgingly... provide a brief response that turned into an adorable yawn.

At our McCleery Ranch sanctuary in Montana, female wolf Thing Two tries rolling on and manipulating her “Boomer Ball” which has anchovy paste spread on it to make it more enticing 😊 #wolfhaven #sanctuary #education #conservation #wolf #wolves #wolfsanctuary #montana

Two of our wonderful volunteers recently created bag enrichments for our resident wolves & wolfdogs in Tenino. All bags were filled with different types of freeze-dried meats & male wolfdog, Luca, seemed unable to decide if the greatest joy was rolling on or eating his treats...

Perfume companies are constantly experimenting with new aromas that may delight our olfactory system, but what scents delight a wolf? An unknown odor recently caused female Mexican wolf F2053 (Magnolia) to vigorously scent roll on a stick. #wolfhaven #wolfsanctuary #trailcam

Is she a goat or a pig? Female McCleery wolf, Goat, hoarded all the beef heart for herself during feeding this morning at our McCleery Ranch sanctuary in Montana. Not to worry though - her companion, Zip, got his fair share 😊 #wolfsanctuary #wolf #wolves #ranchlife #montana

Nothing says summer quite like watermelons, but to give the wolves a unique experience this year, we froze them! Everyone seemed to enjoy their crispy, icy treats 🍉 especially wolfdogs Layla, Mesa, and Penn. Photos by Gelane Clements #wolfdogs #watermelon #wolfsanctuary #summer

#Throwback Riley (2007-2014) was born into the pet trade & came to Wolf Haven in 2009. For most of his life before the sanctuary, he lived in small pen, so it took him a bit to adjust to the trees in his enclosure. With time, he settled in nicely with his beloved companion, Siri

We sadly lost sweet Houston in June after a long battle with a degenerative spinal condition. He came to Wolf Haven in 2016 after being displayed as an attraction in a Texas feed store & lived a good life in the sanctuary with his companion, Zoe. Rest in Peace, Houston 💜

A longtime Wolf Haven volunteer recently brought catnip for enrichment for all of the sanctuary residents, and male wolfdog Mesa was immediately drawn to the intoxicating scent. Fresh herbs are one of the animals’ favorite enrichments to receive #wolfsanctuary #enrichment #summer
